Chubby's is another diner we've been to before. Since we were in the area, we thought we'd make a quick stop. It seems the diner has been closed for a while and is storage lot for shipping containers.Chubby's is a 1940 O'Mahony with a monitor style roof. It's similar in size and color to Collin's Diner. Though it looks like the exterior was renovated. We couldn't help but notice it looks like the four wide horizontal porcelain enamel bands below the windows were removed.

Inside the diner the counter front is tiled. The six rows alternate in dark and light blue color. It's interesting to note that the walls are also tiled. Below the window is a half row of light blue and a full height dark blue tile row. Then six rows of light blue and a bottom row of dark blue tile.

Our previous stop was at the Fish Tale. Now it was back on the the road towards the Palace Diner.

Cheyenne Diner - NYC

Although the Cheyenne Diner is closed, the lights are back on for a brief time. According to this report, scenes are being shot at the diner for the film, "An Englishman in New York."

Cheyenne joins another diner in the news with a Hollywood connection. The former Ken's Diner of Birch Run, MI is being used for scenes in the movie "Whip It!" Ken's is a 1955 O'Mahony diner and came to Birch Run from Yorkville, NY in 1993. flickr pro Agilitynut has a picture of the diner when it was open in 2007. Zemo's Diner - Fairfield, CT

Back in November 2005 the former DeCoven Diner was moved from Duncannon, PA to storage in Monroe, CT. A vintage picture of the diner may be seen in flickr member dinerhotline's photostream here. While in storage plans were made to reopen this 1954 O'Mahony diner at a site on Duka Avenue in Fairfield, CT. Today's news reports the move is on hold until next year. Read the entire article here.

The approximate future location of Zemo's Diner, is four tenths of a mile from the former Fairfield Diner and Vegetarian Enclave in Fairfield, CT. That diner closed in October 2005. We have a picture of the Fairfield on our flickr site here.

Barr's Diner - East Providence, RI

This diner was last used as an office at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. As with many diners, it had several owners/operators through the years. Barr's Diner was one name under which it operated.

On the right is a picture of the diner at its current location, the East Providence Technical and Career Center, East Providence, R.I. The diner has many features we've seen in other diners, giving us an idea of the manufacturer and its age. A search through the diner database yielded some results of similar diners. Two examples are: the former Fegely's Reading Diner and the former Serro's Diner. Both are Monarch models built by Jerry O'Mahony, Inc. in 1938. Barr's appears to be consistent with those diners.

Fegely's was moved to a site in Wyomissing, PA in October 2005. It awaits further restoration by the Archbury Foundation. In February 2003, Serro's was moved to Latrobe and put into storage. The Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor organization stated they will restore it. Plans are to include it as part of the Welcome and Interpretative Center on Route 30 near Ligonier, PA. Since it has been a few years, we would like to know the latest on these two projects.

Perhaps you are wondering what Barr's may look like if it was restored? Agilitynut has two pictures on her website of the former Fegely's Reading Diner: external and internal. As in Agilitynut's internal picture link, Barr's has the same front counter style with orange and black tiles. The diner's stools and booths are missing. Replacement stools would be like the ones pictured to the left, as seen in the former Tommy's Deluxe Diner, a 1939 O'Mahony when it was located in Middletown, RI. More about Tommy's and its restoration here.

The Worcester Lunch Car Company adopted a similar counter style and colors. An example of this would be the Four Sisters Owl Diner. Agilitynut has pictures of that diner here.

Performing a restoration of Barr's presents serious challenges. From the years of neglect, the roof shows signs of water damage. The extent of which probably won't be realized until the restoration begins. Keith Walker just opened the former Tommy's as the Road Island Diner. Total restoration costs reportedly ran about a million dollars. We'll follow the progress on Barr's diner and report as new information becomes available.
